A Day In The Delta

A leisurely afternoon doesn’t usually mean handling bees or drinking snake wine, but you get a different kind of outing when you visit the Mekong Delta.

It takes roughly two hours by car to get from HCMC to Ben Tre Province, but the difference seems worlds apart. You trade in your battered scooter and incessant honking for a seat on a barge plying the river.

Our particular trip involved a day in some hamlets in an island on the river after departing from My Tho City, starting with a visit to a coconut grove. Locals earned their keep from selling coconut candies and honey, each of which were available to sample. The beauty of the coconut ca
ndies was that you could eat the candy and the rice paper wrap they came in, making waste negligible.
“It’s less noisy, the air is good here,” said German traveller Stefan Schimonsky, 2
6.
“After being mostly in cities, I was interested in how (people in the countryside) live.”

Our guide then hauled out a boa constrictor and offered it around for photos, and of course I took the bait. The big snake seemed a bit dozy, which was just as well since I’m not the biggest fan of snakes normally. Our guide was pretty intrepid; he also handled a large honeycomb crawling with bees, and wandered around asking anybody if they wanted to sample some truly fresh honey.

A trip to Ben Tre is noteworthy just to get the city out of your system; riding a boat on the river or taking a bicycle down a country road.

“This is nice and relaxing,” said Canadian visitor Jenaya McChesney, 22.
If a noisy night in Pham Ngu Lao Street drinking beer is your thing, Ben Tre may seem a bit slow. But if you just spent a night doing that very thing, you might find the change of pace in the Mekong Delta refreshing.
